How to select the best rug to anchor your space...
Most designers will agree, that a room isn't complete without a rug, but how do you select the right rug when there seem to be endless options? The first thing to consider is the way the room is going to be used, whether it be a high traffic area or a quiet room that doesn't get much wear. That will often guide you in selecting the right material whether it be wool, jute, cotton, polypropelene or PVC. Each material wears differently. Each material also creates different moods. Creating a casual mood or a more formal atmosphere should be reflected in your rug choice. Of course, the color palette of the room and the size of the rug is also a major part of selecting the best rug.

Clients often ask, where do you start in choosing the colors and elements in a room? We believe most rooms start with the foundation of a rug because it anchors the space and creates a base of texture, color or pattern that has the most impact. Rugs are a great jumping off point. Start with a wonderful rug and the rest will fall into place. It sets the tone of a room, whether that be a casual elegance or a more formal feel, rugs set the mood.
Choosing a rug that reflects the overall mood of the room, that special color or neutral you are going for, as well as the texture and the way the room is used, is critical to making the right selection. Rooms that have high traffic with kids, dogs, sandy feet, require a performance rug that can with-stand the use. Indoor/outdoor rugs are a great choice in high traffic areas. Rugs come in a variety of materials. Everything from polyester for high performance to cotton, wool, sisal and jute.
Rugs are good for indoors as well as outdoors. Rugs made for outdoors are designed and constructed to stand up to rain, sunshine and the elements. From the backings to the materials used to treat the product, manufacturers produce these rugs to be durable and they are also a great choice for indoors. Outdoor rugs create an inviting setting on any patio or deck.

How to select the best size rug for my room?
The point of the rug is to make the room and the furniture feel anchored. Generally, we try to select a size as large as possible for a room or area to avoid the rug looking too skimpy. In a living area, we usually have most of the furniture arrangement on the rug. Smaller items like end tables and chairs should have all feet on the rug or off the rug to avoid it being unstable. Often with heavier pieces like a sofa, we place the sofa's front half on the rug or the rug just in front of the sofa. Keep in mind the room will feel larger and the seating area more welcoming when the rug encompasses the seating area. Take into consideration doorways where a door swing could hit the carpet. Walkways around a seating area should either have enough rug space to walk on comfortably or bare floor to avoid walking half on and half off the rug. In bedrooms we often make the rug large enough to be comfortably walked on by all sides of the bed or we sometimes use two smaller rugs on each side of the bed. Is jute the same as sisal and is one better than the other?
Jute comes from the jute plant and sisal comes from an agave plant. They are both durable, but sisal is the strongest which also makes it the hardest underfoot. Sisal tends to be hard and scratchy in feel, which is why we use mostly jute rugs that are much softer to the touch and feel comfortable on your feet.
